The former name of the city was Maksudabad. In 1706, when Dewan Murshid Kuli Khan was recognised as the Nawab of Bengal under the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, he decided to move his capital from Dhaka (Now in Bangladesh) to the lush fertile banks of Bhagirathi in Mukusudabad which he later named as “Murshidabad” (in connection with his own first name “Murshid”). As Murshidabad was then a flourishing place for international trading hub for all noblemen and businesses.
